The Institute that has regular interaction with industry experts identified the glaring gaps between the requirements and availability of competent supply chain professionals. “IIM Udaipur also understood that a one year MBA programme for individuals with work experience would be an ideal fit. Hence the foray into a full-time MBA in Supply Chain Management,” he adds.
Backbone of a business
The supply chain can broadly be defined as the ‘backbone’ of any economy, says Ramesh Anbanandam, associate professor, Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee. “A strong SCM ensures the delivery of products to end-users. It serves as a bridge to connect producers with customers. Absence or weak system cannot assure timely delivery of products and can jeopardise the economic development,” says Anbanandam. Though IIT Roorkee does not offer a dedicated programme in the SCM, it is part of the curriculum of the regular MBA.
As India aspires to be a 5 trillion dollar economy, Shah emphasises it is extremely important that businesses focus on improving efficiencies across their respective supply chains to be able to compete not only domestically, but internationally. “Supply chain management can help businesses both, in the manufacturing as well as service industries to gain the efficiency edge and improve bottom-line,” says Shah.
Future of the sector
With increasing competition, Indian businesses need to focus on supply chain issues much more carefully now, than in the past as there remains a significant scope of cost advantages in the supply chain management. “The collateral benefit of the pandemic has brought India on the international map. Global industries keenly look at it as a supply chain hub. Given the situation there is a tremendous opportunity for supply chain professionals in India,” Shah adds.
Covid and its impact
The ongoing health crisis has shown beyond a doubt that supply chain is an extremely critical component of any business and is most often the worst hit by a pandemic of this nature and scale. “The crisis has forced businesses to take a re-look at their supply chain and question aspects that are taken for granted during normal times. It has also provided a fillip to organisations that are looking to digitise their supply chain and this provides a unique opportunity to India,” Shah explains.
Candidates gaining expertise in this field can hope to have lucrative career opportunities as supplychain analyst, data analyst, supply chain manager etc in E-commerce, retail, manufacturing, FMCG, healthcare, automobiles etc. Anbanandam feels that students with specialisation in supply chain clubbed with knowledge of analytics will have an upper hand.
